WHAT A WEEK THIS HAS BEEN!!!!
Directly from the Cedars-Sinai Hospital room that Valerie is in today, recuperating from two hours of surgery on Tuesday...here is an update of the 'incredible' last few days.
After being in Scripps Memorial Hospital for one week, fighting the very serious infection that was diagnosed upon her arrival, it was determined on Sunday, 8/20, that her gallbladder was enlarged and appeared somewhat abnormal on a CAT scan. Physicians at Scripps Memorial determined that gallbladder surgery was not an option, due to the proximity to the liver and tumors. Their recommendation to put in a tube to drain the gallbladder which is a process with "no end to it", and comes with its own set of problems. After several phone consults with Dr. Nick Nissen, an incredibly talented liver surgeon at Cedars-Sinai Hospital, who was actually our first consulting doctor at the beginning of this 'journey', we decided not to proceed with the tube option, and we transferred Val via ambulance to Cedars-Sinai Hospital in LA on Monday evening, 8/21. As many of you know, 'waiting patiently' is one of the most difficult aspects of life, but it certainly takes on a whole new dimension, when one's life is concerned. We waited three days for a bed to open up at Cedars so we could transfer Val......three very long days during which she was in severe pain and had a fever which would not completely go away.
We arrived on Monday night, 8/21, at Cedars-Sinai Hospital and Val was checked in quickly and taken right to a room. Early Tuesday morning, Dr. Nick Nissen examined Val, ordered an abdominal ultrasound, and a few other tests, and scheduled her for surgery later that day. At 4:00 PM Val was 'wheeled into the operating room', and two very long hours later, Dr. Nissen came out and told us that her 'nasty, red, angry, filled with poisoning pus' gallbladder was entirely gone, and that the infections she had been fighting should clear up in days. He actually showed us several 'amazing' color photographs of the gallbladder, both before removing and after. It did look 'angry' to say the least, and we rejoiced that this 'culprit' was gone!!!!
Wednesday, 8/23, was the first day 'after surgery'......and as all who have had any surgery know....it was a very difficult day. Val is experiencing discomfort from the surgery and from the fact that her 'systems' were shutting down for several days, and needed to be 're-booted' to function normally again. She is very aware, however, that the 'culprit' is gone and that she is 'on the mend'. The 'mystery' surrounding the cause of the recent recurring infections has been solved. She should be able to return to her home, her own bed, and best of all to her three boys on Friday or Saturday. We have all been thankful for the outcome this week. Nancy, Chris, and I have been on hospital duty up here in LA.....Rich and Paul are on 'kid duty' back in San Marcos.....while Julie who accompanied us to LA on Monday night and then drove home to San Luis Obispo in the middle of the night....checks in frequently......and so many others in the background are helping too. WHAT A TEAM!!!!
Thanks for your prayers.

You do all make a wonderful team. Please send hugs & kisses to the patient. Please let her know we are planning several Pre-assembled Dream Dinners for the family to pop in the freezer and enjoy at a moment's notice. All the neighbors here in Stone Canyon are rooting for a safe and full recovery. See you when you get home.
Love,
Frank & Jen Gaetani and kids

Thank you Lord!! Our family has been praying for all of you and are thankful that there has been at least some relief now that the infection culprit has been found.
Val,
I'm thinking about you constantly and praying for you and your family. I thought about you a lot while on vacation and had no idea you were having to endure all this.
I love you Val and I'm praying for your pain to go away. It hurts to hear you're in pain. Get the rest you need to regain your strength and come home.
Love,
Deanna
Val;
Can't wait to see you again!! Praying that your digestive system would heal up quickly so you can enjoy eating and drinking again - and regain your strength, so you can come home to your 3 little angels. I saw baby Tyler briefly today as I dropped off the dinners to your dad, he is sooooo cute. He was a happy boy... Richard,I wish all kids had a grandpa like you, you are awesome!
Psalms 143:8
Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in You...
Lord, we place Valerie again at your feet, and we pray in the name of Jesus, that you would heal her body from the effects of the surgery, and that she would be able to come home. Please Lord let tonight and tomorrow bring her renewed strenght and healing, as we trust in you alone..
I found this link on the Peterson blog - it is really great...

Val and Chris, I've been following this in-between my 18 hr work days here in Korea. So glad to hear the proceedure was a success.
Val, you are without a doubt, the strongest woman I have ever known. I am confident that you will regain your strength quickly and be home soon. Can't wait to see you in front of your home watching the boys ride their bikes.
You are always in our thoughts,
David and Edie
Dear Val and Family,
You ALL have amazing strength and endurance! I have never seen anything like it in my life...you are all such an inspiration! Val...I am sure you are anxious to get this "bump in the road" over with...I remember well being in a hospital bed for six months straight while pregnant with Kendall....I was the LEAST pleasant person to be around!!! I just hope that you can hold onto the fact that this will end...the "culprit", like your Aunt said, is gone and you will only go up from here!
I am praying for you all the time Val...you are in God's hands my friend...and there is no better place to be than there! I pray that you come home very soon so you can kiss and squish those beautiful boys of yours...and so we can kiss and squish you also!!!
You remain in our thoughts and prayers...the Lord has equipped you with enormous strength Val...there is NOTHING you cannot do...especially with Him on your side! We love you!
Love,
Kerry Randall
Val,
I can only try to understand how difficult these last two weeks have been for you. You are a very brave woman Val. I remember the last time I was out and we were hiking up a hill near your house and you were way ahead of me and I could barely keep up with you and you yelled to me: Get tough - it is mind over body. You exemplify this everyday. Your strength never ceases to amaze me.
Get your rest and get better soon.
Love,
Marianne
You will be home soon.........
